About Excel and XML

Excel is the Microsoft Excel workbook format (.xlsx), also opened by Google Sheets, Numbers and LibreOffice.

XML is a tag-based format used by feeds, invoices, sitemaps and many older business systems.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert Excel to XML?

Paste your Excel data into the Input box or open a file. The XML result appears instantly on the right — copy it or click Download.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. FileCrafty converts the data inside your browser, so customer lists, exports and API keys never leave your device. It also works offline once the page is open.

What happens to the first row?

By default the first row is used as column names, so each row becomes an object with those keys. Turn off “First row contains column names” to get plain arrays instead.

Which Excel files are supported?

Modern .xlsx workbooks. If the file has several sheets, choose the sheet next to the file name. Formulas are converted to their results and dates to ISO dates (2026-10-16). Old .xls files need to be saved as .xlsx first.

How are XML attributes and repeated elements handled?

Attributes become keys starting with “@”, element text next to child elements becomes “#text”, and elements that repeat (such as several <book> items) become a list. The same rules are used in reverse when creating XML.

Is there a size limit?

There is no fixed limit — files of tens of megabytes work fine on a computer. Very large files are not shown in the text box, but they are still converted in full.

Is it free?

Yes — free, unlimited and without sign-up.
