How to Sign a PDF Without Printing It

Print it, sign it, scan it, email it back. For years that was how you signed a document, and it still wastes a surprising amount of time — and paper. You can sign a PDF directly on your computer or phone in about a minute.

Three ways to create your signature

In the Sign PDF tool, click Sign and pick whichever suits you:

  • Draw it with your mouse, a trackpad or — best of all — your finger or stylus on a phone or tablet.
  • Type your name and choose a handwriting-style font. Quick, tidy and perfectly readable.
  • Upload a photo of your signature on white paper. The white background is removed automatically, so only the ink remains.

Signing several pages? Your recent signatures are listed in the dialog, so adding the same one again is a single click.

Step by step

  1. Open Sign PDF and drop in your document.
  2. Scroll to the page with the signature line and click Sign.
  3. Create your signature — it is added to the page you are viewing.
  4. Drag it onto the line and pull the corners to resize it.
  5. Need a date or your printed name? Use Text to add it next to the signature.
  6. Click Download to save the signed PDF.

The signature is written into the page itself, so it looks the same in every PDF reader, on every device.

Filling in the rest of the form

Many documents that need a signature also have fields to complete. If the PDF has real form fields, Fill PDF form lets you type straight into them. If it is just a flat scan, use Text to type on top of the lines and Whiteout to cover anything you need to correct. Add text to PDF explains the options in more detail.

Is an electronic signature legally valid?

In many countries, yes, for most everyday documents. In the United States the ESIGN Act and in the European Union the eIDAS Regulation recognise electronic signatures, and a simple signature like this is widely accepted for things such as rental agreements, consent forms, invoices and HR paperwork.

Some documents — for example certain property transfers, wills or official filings — may require a qualified or certified digital signature, a witness or a wet-ink original. If you are unsure, ask the person or organisation that sent you the document. (This is general information, not legal advice.)

Why sign in the browser?

Documents you sign are often the most sensitive ones you have: contracts, bank forms, medical consents. Many signing services upload them to their servers. FileCrafty’s editor runs entirely on your device — the PDF and your signature never leave your browser, and there is no account to create.

Quick answer

Open Sign PDF, add your signature by drawing, typing or uploading it, place it on the line and save. No printer, no scanner.
